The 2014 APMA Young Physicians’ Institute (YPI) took place October 10–12 in Franklin, TN, at the headquarters of the Podiatry Insurance Company of America (PICA). PICA is a founding sponsor of the APMA Young Physicians’ Program. In addition to PICA, the event was sponsored by Merz North America, the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, and APMAPAC.
During the three day meeting, more than 50 young physicians, residents, podiatric medical students, and APMA Trustees gathered for leadership training, practice management advice, and networking. The YPI provides APMA with invaluable insight into the concerns of young physicians and helps shape the future direction of the organization. Breakout discussions at the YPI were led by members of the Young Physicians’ Leadership Panel and focused on young physicians in leadership roles and the APMA Annual Scientific Meeting.
The YPI continues to grow as more state components recognize the importance of nurturing young leaders, and 2014 saw the largest meeting yet. In 2013 the APMA House of Delegates (HOD) passed a resolution (9-13) to strongly encourage all state components to sponsor a young physician’s attendance at the YPI, HOD, and Legislative Conference. This year 19 components and two residency programs sent a representative to YPI, and APMA hopes to see this involvement increase at the 2015 HOD and Legislative Conference.
